Well, I think I can safely say I wasn’t the only one that said “Thank F*** that year is over!” when the clock struck midnight on January 1st this New Year!
2016 was a funny old year, personally as well as globally (I’m not even going to start on the Brexit/Trump fiasco — I’m fully in burying your head mode and hope it’ll just go away).
The year didn’t get off to the best start for me when I tore my ACL at a friend’s 30th birthday party (it was at an indoor trampoline park — fantastic fun until I hurt myself).
What followed was a year of savage dependency on my poor wife, who, to her credit, handled the whole thing with utter grace and poise, though I’m sure at times she wanted to kill me.
Thankfully, being a freelancer who works from home 3 days a week I didn’t have to worry about taking too much time off work (turns out sitting with your leg up on the sofa with a laptop is just as efficient as working at a desk).
Roll on 12 months and I’m now recovering from ACL reconstruction surgery, which hopefully means the worst is behind us with the long road of rehab ahead.
It almost feels like the saga with my knee is a good start and end point for a turbulent year, a couple of painful bookends to round off a pretty crappy 2016!
So, with the New Year upon us, now seems like a good time to reflect on some of the changes in the pipeline for 2017, both for the business and myself personally.
Saying Goodbye to Old Partnerships in 2017
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our working partnership with Status Boost.
After a good many years slogging it out as a small business owner, Nichola has landed herself a permanent position with Coventry University and has decided to fold the business.
Nichola was responsible for putting me in touch with my first ever client, someone who I am happy to say is still with me 18 months later, and this is something that I will be forever grateful for.
I will be sorry to see an end to the ‘Blog add-on service’ that we had with Status Boost, though I wish Nichola all the best in her new endeavour!
Building New Relationships for a New Year
As they say, when one door closes, another one opens…
Back in November 2015, my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Mexico where we met another couple doing the exact same thing.
They were from Dorset and as it turns out were also freelancers — a photographer and graphic designer, and a website developer.
Going forward, if any new or current clients wish to discuss branding, graphic design (including logos, packaging, signage, print), website design and build, or product/service photography for their business, this is something that we can now provide through this new partnership.
Growing the Business with Unicorn Power
As ever, I will be looking for ways to improve and expand the business.
UnicornThesaurus is still in its infancy I am thankful for the ongoing trust and support of the clients that I work with.

Relaunching my Personal Blog in 2017
As some of you will be aware, UnicornThesaurus began life as a personal blog. It was borne out of a need for me to express myself through writing, something that has always been an emotional outlet.
When things progressed and UnicornThesaurus was reborn as a freelance writing and digital PR business, the blog fell by the wayside, as did my personal writing. This is something that needs to be (and will be) rectified this year!

It’s pretty basic in it’s design at the moment (logo in progress) but my plan is to start slowly by committing to at least 2 blogs a month this year and building from there.
